Liptovská Mara is a part of the system of Vážska cascade dams. It was built in 1969-1975. 13 villages were flooded, of which 12 were completely demolished (Čemice, Demín, Liptovská Mara, (Old) Liptovská Sielnica, Nižné Dechtáre, Paludza, Parížovce, Ráztoky, Sestrč, Sokolče, Vrbie, Vyšné Dechtáre). Together 940 families were resettled, representing over 4,000 inhabitants. It is the largest water reservoir in Slovakia with total volume of 360.5 million m3 and covering area of 27km2 . The only remaining part of the flooded village of Liptovská Mara is the Gothic church. The church was built in the second half of the 13th century and rebuilt in the 15th-17th century. The most valuable architectural and art details were transferred to the area of the Liptov open-air museum in Pribylina.
