It is an area of Veľká Fatra National Park with highest protection level. The reservation protects original communities of mountain spruces mostly older the 100 years. Forest is sparse and low, typical for hard mountainous conditions of the top mountain ranges. There are communities of blueberries and cranberies on acidic soils. Area is important place of moorcoock lekking. Reservation also provides shelter to brown bears (Ursus arctos) and lynxes (Lynxlynx). Veľká Fatra territory was declared as a protected landscape area in 1973 and the Veľká Fatra National Park in 2002. Basic natural values of Veľká Fatra are: fact that it is a large mountain area with a ragged surface, rich karst formations with contiguous forests, extensive and typical wild zones, long grassy ridge zone, varied vegetation and animal life, and the largest area of original occurence of yew in Europe. National Park covers area of 404 km2, it is surounded by protection zone of 261 km2. A significant part of its territory has a high level of protection. Starting points for hiking and cycling in national park are towns of Martin, Ružomberok, Turčianske Teplice, ski resorts Donovaly and Malinô Brdo, and Museum of folk architecture Vlkolínec, which belongs to Unesco's cultural heritage.
